Disabled people are twice as likely to live in financial poverty but disability poverty is about much more than that. It is about access to and quality of education; housing; transport; employment; access to shops and services; access to health care and social services; levels of hate crime and access to justice.

Leonard Cheshire Disability recently launched its End disability poverty campaign to help raise disability poverty on the Government agenda. As part of this campaign they are asking campaigners to send a letter to their MP asking him or her to write to Ivan Lewis MP, Minister for Care Services, raising the issue of what happens to disabled people who can’t afford to pay for the care they need and calling on him to make sure that, in future, the social care system is fair and equal.
